"Thanks for a lovely 2 weeks at your charming gite. Loved your gites and the surrounding grounds. Thanks also for your hospitality, loved being greeted by flowers, wine and chocolates! Also appreciated being able to bring the two dogs. Good luck - would love a return though already planning our own property!"

We stayed in the Gallery for 10 nights in September. I describe it as "buried in the countryside" and the grounds of the Gites are "tranquil" so this was a very relaxing time -an archetypical holiday. We loved the hens , the cats and Maisie the dog. Sally and Irving are excellent hosts but not at all intrusive and their daily deliveries of croissants, fresh bread and wonderful eggs from the hens were most welcome. We could enjoy lazy breakfasts and watch the day go by from our balcony overlooking the garden. Accommodation was beautifully furnished and well appointed. The local restaurant was excellent and surrounding towns (Pontivy, Josselin, Vannes) a joy to explore. The coast is accessible with some great beaches.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you enjoyed it, and we'd love to see you both again. All returning guests benefit from a price freeze, so what you pay 1st time around sticks for a 2 further years
DeleteAbsolutely beautiful accommodation and surroundings and the photographs really do not do it justice! It is so peaceful here and we had such a relaxing stay. Also loved the chickens who roam around the garden! Can also recommend the breakfast package which was excellent and delivered at the time we asked every morning - eggs were so good we bought some to take home. Owners delightful and nothing was too much trouble - we will definitely be back sometime in the future as there are such a lot of places we still want to visit.

ReplyDeleteWe stayed in the Coach House for a week from 17th July, and wished we could have stayed much longer. The location is superb; beautiful gardens and very comfortable accommodation. The cats, hens and Maisie all added to the ambiance of the place. Our hosts were welcoming and helpful. A perfect spot in which to relax and if you wish, to explore the country and coastal regions. Many thanks Michael & Lynn. It was great to meet you both and hope to see you again. Your garden party in the grounds was most enjoyable and it was great to hook up everyone!
ReplyDeleteI loved your unique brand of humour Michael- thoroughly entertaining! Sally
DeleteClaire and I spent a great week here exploring the Brest-Nantes canal by bicycle. It was an ideal location for this, and we loved being is such a quiet spot as well as being within easy reach of the coast, and larger towns. The Coach House was exactly as advertised, well equipped and neatly laid out. And it was a delight to spend time in the peaceful garden, with the chickens and ducks for company, after a long bike ride. We also enjoyed a great meal in Melrand, and a few visits to the pretty town of Pontivy nearby. Thanks to Sally and Irvin, we were made very welcome and had everything we wanted, plus the bonus of fresh eggs on demand.

We had a week in the Coach house, just perfection . Beautifully appointed with wonderfully generous hosts. Don't miss out on the welcome hamper. Great places to visit all within easy drives but we looked forward to returning and enjoying the peace and solitude of a barbeque in the garden. Don't miss this gem.

Perfection! If you read all the reviews you will notice that without exception people have enthused about every aspect of their holiday here. You will also notice that so many guests become repeat customers. The reason for this is Sally and Irvin's friendliness, thoughtfulness, generosity and attention to detail. I have stayed in many holiday homes furnished with mismatched old furniture, cheap uncomfortable mattresses and the bare minimum of kitchen equipment. This place is in a league of it's own. Spotlessly clean, with tasteful furnishings, thoughtful touches such as toiletries, DVDs, a welcome gift of produce and the most amazing four poster bed. I could go on and on .... If tranquillity and romance is what you are after for barbeques in the sunshine or cosy nights in front of the fire then this is the place for you! With so much more to enjoy in the area we started thinking about our next visit before we had even left.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much.
We'll be back!

Review title: Tranquility and Romance in Beautiful, Rural Brittany
Enjoyed a wonderful week at La Metairie in Morbihan this August. I was visiting from my home in Bermuda, where, without wanting to sound boastful, we enjoy what is reputed to be the highest standard of living in the world. But this delightful, unspoiled province of Southern Brittany could give any paradise isle a run for its money. And it was warm and sunny but sans humidity — what a relief!
Only the most curmudgeonly guest could find fault with the accommodation. Clean, airy and replete with all the facilities necessary for comfortable self-catering — plus speedy wifi. The gites are tastefully appointed throughout, with modern but classy furnishings, fine linens, subtle objets d’art and sturdy, log-burning heaters. These are gites for two (no children) and they exude Romance with a capital ‘R’.
This being August, we routinely dined alfresco on an elevated wooden deck, beside a grassy orchard. A sweet symphony of birdsong at twilight was pierced only by the distant peal of bells from a medieval church across the Blavet Valley, where Julius Caesar once battled local seafarers in 56 BC. Enough to inspire poetry in the most jaded traveller!
La Metairie’s setting is beautiful; a stone farmhouse (it was a cider farm) framed by three acres of rolling lawns, mature trees and colourful blossoms. There’s a lily pond shaded by a sprawling willow tree and close by, rough-hewn timber steps and fluted pillars of sunlight led me through a glade down to a narrow river, where I photographed colourful, darting dragonflies. The woodland is a magnet for birdlife and you might spot goldfinches, cuckoos, woodpeckers or even the occasional kingfisher.
This is a haven for nature lovers. I photographed bumblebees and butterflies and bright-blue bougainvillea — as well as the owners’ pet ducks and chickens (their diverse flock includes spectacular, fluffy-plumed Silkies) and cats. Somehow, they all get along. You could happily park the car for a couple of weeks, sit back and only leave the premises to fetch fresh baguettes, milk and more wine. But within easy reach are postcard-pretty, historic towns and villages that boast all the prerequisites of a classic French rural holiday experience; flower-decked outdoor cafes, aromatic patisseries, gothic churches, arched footbridges over winding rivers — and negligible traffic. This is France so it almost goes without saying that that the food is… ‘magnifique’.
The beaches of Southern Brittany are easily accessible by car and the relatively flat terrain surrounding La Metairie also makes it a terrific base for cyclists and walkers. Within a half-hour drive is Lake Guerledan, Brittany’s largest lake, which features water sports, fishing, boat trips and classy restaurants perched above the water. We enjoyed a leisurely aperitif here as kayakers happily paddled by in the sunshine.
Add to all of the above the genuine bonhomie of my hosts, Irvin and Sally — who were extraordinarily helpful, welcoming and knowledgeable — and you’ll understand why I have already pencilled in a return visit for next September. For couples seeking tranquility, comfort and romance in a setting so bucolic and unspoiled it seems to belong to a different era, this is the real deal. Neither my words, nor online photos, can do it justice; you simply have to experience it for yourself.
Wow !!! Thank you so much and we're pleased you enjoyed your stay
